Gus Poyet took charge at Sunderland on Tuesday on a mission to restore unity to the struggling English Premier League club following the divisiveness of Paolo Di Canios brief, stormy reign. Poyets immediate challenge is to produce Sunderlands first victory in the league, with the northeast club bottom with just one point from seven matches. "Trust me, believe, connect with the team," Poyet said after signing a two-year contract. "We are all together in this. Its important now we stick together." As with Di Canios appointment in March, American owner Ellis Short has hired a man with no previous topflight managerial experience. "Its a big, big challenge," Poyet said. "I thought that I would have an opportunity in the Premier League and now Ive got it I need to make sure I prove that they picked the right man to get us from the situation that we are." The former Uruguay midfielder began his mission with a managerial approach far removed from that of the maverick Di Canio, who left amid claims -- disputed by the Italian -- of player unrest. "The idea is to address the problems quickly, make sure that we train and convince the players to get better, and then slowly that will make us pick up points," Poyet said. "The sooner we win the better, but the idea is to make sure that we understand the way we would like them to play football. We think its the best way. "So there has to be a very good communication with the players -- understanding, trust. We need to commit as a group. We need to make sure that we are all together, the players, the staff, the fans. Make sure that we are very strong to make sure we can win football games." The 45-year-old has quickly found work again despite being fired by second-tier club Brighton in June for gross misconduct. He becomes Sunderlands sixth permanent manager in less than five years, with Di Canio lasting only six months in the job before being fired in September. "We analyzed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward," said Short, the American businessman who bought Sunderland in 2008. As a midfielder, Poyet spent his peak playing years with Zaragoza, Chelsea and Tottenham before becoming assistant manager to Dennis Wise at Swindon in 2006. He followed Wise to Leeds before Tottenham hired him to work under Juande Ramos in October 2007. Although Poyet won the League Cup with Ramos at Tottenham early in 2008, they were fired in October after a poor start to the season. Poyet, though, was soon handed his first managerial job in 2009 at Brighton, which was then in the third tier, steering the south-coast club to promotion in 2011 by winning the League One title. The team missed out on promotion to the Premier League in May by losing in the League Championship playoffs before Poyet was fired. Now Poyet is back in work and he has almost two weeks during the international break to plan for Sunderlands next match at Swansea on Oct. 19. The players have shown signs they were starting to gel under interim manager Kevin Ball in recent weeks, with a League Cup victory over third-tier club Peterborough followed by stronger showings in losses to Liverpool and Manchester United. "If there were no talented players and no quality players the challenge would be practically impossible," Poyet said. "I am convinced the players are good enough." The Brazilian-born strikers brace drew him level with Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo as the leagues leading scorers with 17 goals apiece through 16 rounds. "The important thing is to help the team win, not the goals," Diego Costa said. Hoyer is expected to make a full recovery after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery on Friday, and Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said he hopes the QB will be able to return for practice next spring. Hoyer had his torn right anterior cruciate ligament repaired at the Cleveland Clinic. The 28-year-old sustained the season-ending injury on Oct. 3 against Buffalo in the first quarter of his third start. It was a devastating blow to the Cleveland native who had led his hometown Browns to two straight wins while replacing injured starter Brandon Weeden. "Were hopeful in the spring that well see him," Chudzinski said following practice as the Browns got ready for Sundays game in Green Bay. "From my understanding, everything went well with the surgery. Just knowing him, from a rehab standpoint, I know hes going to do everything he can to get ready." Its been quite a few days for Hoyer. In addition to the operation, he celebrated a birthday and he and his wife, Lauren, welcomed their second child, a daughter named Cameron. Hoyers storybook start to the season ended when he got hurt on an awkward slide at the end of an 11-yard scramble against the Bills. Hoyers right cleat got caught underneath him as he slid, and he was hit as he hit the turf from the side by Bills rookie linebacker Kiko Alonso. Before he was injured, Hoyer had energized the Browns, who had their three-game winning streak stopped Sunday by Detroit. Hoyer, who spent three seasons as Tom Bradys backup in New England and had been cut by three teams in 11 months, took over for Weeden and guided the Browns to wins over Minnesota and Cincinnati. He threw go-ahead touchdown passes in the fourth quarter of both games. "He did a great job coming in and gave us a rreal spark," Chudzinski said.dddddddddddd "He played very well. You saw improvement every game that he played, and he was able to make plays for us and really help us in that stretch to get us going." Hoyers performance may not prevent the Browns from drafting a quarterback in next years draft, but it did show that he can be an option in the event they need a QB or if Weeden continues to struggle. The Browns made some other roster moves on Friday, placing rookie defensive back Josh Aubrey on injured reserve and waiving running back Bobby Rainey. Chudzinski said Aubrey sprained his knee and ankle in practice Thursday. He appeared in six games this season on special teams. In the win over the Vikings, Aubrey ran for 34 yards on a faked punt, a key play in Clevelands win. Also, the club promoted wide receiver Tori Gurley and cornerback Julian Posey from their practice squad to the active roster. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Gurley played in the Browns first two games and made one catch for 15 yards. ---- NOTES: RB Willis McGahee practiced after sitting out Thursday to rest his surgically repaired knees. McGahee said "all systems go" for Sunday and hes listed as probable on the injury report. ... OLB Jabaal Sheard said hes eager to return this week after missing three games with a sprained left knee. ... Chudzinski said Weeden had an excellent week of practice as he tried to shake off an inexcusable interception last week in a loss to Detroit. "I thought hes had his best couple of days of practice here: very focused and receptive to the coaching," Chudzinski said. "You can see him doing things, specifically working to improve in areas that were talking about where he needs to improve. I am expecting him and I have confidence in him, like the team does, to go out and play his very best."
